Selong Belanak is a wide, gently curved bay about 45 minutes west of Kuta by scooter. It has one of the best beginner surf waves in Indonesia, extraordinarily calm swimming water in the middle section, a small but excellent cafe scene and accommodation that sits within steps of the beach. It is, in our opinion, the best single spot in South Lombok.
What makes it special: The bay faces almost perfectly west, the sunsets here are among the best we have seen anywhere. The left-hand wave at the western end is long, gentle, and consistent. And unlike the beaches around Kuta, Selong Belanak still feels like a place that belongs to its people.

What Selong Belanak Looks Like
The bay is roughly 2 kilometres long, curving between two green headlands. The western headland is steeper the track up it gives panoramic views back over the bay and forward toward Mawi. The eastern headland is lower and dotted with a few newer accommodation options looking out over the water.
The beach itself changes character from west to east. At the western end, the wave peels through, and surfers are in the water from dawn. In the middle section, the water flattens completely, the depth is gradual, and the current is gentle, making it the best swimming section. Toward the eastern end, it gets shallower and quieter still.
The sand is white and fine. The water is a clear turquoise to blue depending on the time of day and cloud cover. In the late afternoon the whole bay turns gold.
Surfing at Selong Belanak
The left-hand wave at the western end of Selong Belanak is the reason many people come here. It is consistently rated as the best beginner wave in South Lombok, possibly the best in Lombok full stop.
The wave
A long, rolling left-hander that breaks over a sand bottom. In the right conditions it peels for 50-100 metres, slow enough to allow plenty of time to get to your feet and find a position. The wave breaks away from the rocks, so beginners are not surfing toward anything dangerous. The shoulder is forgiving.
In peak swell (June to August) the wave gets more powerful and more consistent. In the shoulder months (April-May, September-October) it is smaller but still very surfable. The wave is rarely flat in the dry season.

A cluster of small cafes sits at the western end of Selong Belanak, directly facing the surf break and the sunset.
What they serve: fresh coconuts, cold drinks, Indonesian rice and noodle plates, simple Western breakfast (eggs, toast, fruit), and fresh fish when available. The best sunset seat in Selong Belanak is at the cafe on the far western end. Order a cold drink around 5:30 pm and stay until it is dark.

The village of Selong Belanak sits just behind the beach and has several family-run warungs serving local food. From Kuta Lombok (most common)
The drive from Kuta Lombok to Selong Belanak takes 40-50 minutes by scooter on a mostly good road. The route passes through dry hillside and small farming villages. Take the main road west from Kuta toward Mawun, then continue following signs for Selong Belanak. The last section involves a descent into the bay.
- Scooter hire in Kuta: IDR 70,000-100,000 per day. The road is suitable for any standard scooter.
- Grab or Gojek from Kuta: IDR 50,000-80,000 one way. Less reliable outside of peak hours.

Sunrise on the beach
Selong Belanak faces west for sunset but the morning light on the bay from the east is equally beautiful. The beach at 6:30am — mist still on the hills, first surfers in the water, a few fishing boats coming in — is one of those travel moments that stays with you. Scooter to nearby beaches
Selong Belanak is a good base for day rides to the beaches west of it. Mawi (dramatic, surf-only, 20 min further west) and further west toward Pengantap are accessible in a morning. The roads require confidence on a scooter — ask your guesthouse about conditions before going.
